Birth of a legendary mezcal
One night, a man learned of the existence of a legendary mezcal master who had the gift of capturing the essence of a person in mezcal drops.
For months he consulted with prominent anthropologists, ethnologists and the most renowned mezcalero masters. Most had heard the story and although they dismissed it as mere fantasy, the man was determined to find it.
Corroborating the complex orography of Oaxaca, the place that best fit the clues collected was Cerro de Nueve Puntas, near the town of San Dionisio Ocotepec.
He ventured to the vicinity of the hill, asking everyone who he met but no one knew the much sought after teacher.
Disappointed, he left the place. But as he came down the hill late at night, he met a beautiful woman in white who made him a proposal: if the man agreed to follow her, she would take him to the teacher.
As they traversed a field of wild agaves, the task became more difficult. The thorns of the agaves were getting bigger and the woman was going so fast that she was flying through the darkness. At this moment, the man knew that the one he was following was the infamous Matlazihua, a specter that makes men fall in love to lead them to their perdition. Despite the pain and fear, her determination did not waver. The man ran after her, prickling his entire body.
Suddenly, the torture ended and they found themselves in a wasteland. At the center of it stood an old house and a mezcal palenque. To the man’s surprise, the woman he was following disappeared before his eyes. After vanishing, he spied an imposing figure looming from the threshold of the house. At last he had found the legendary master.
Having talked for a long time, the teacher agreed to reveal his secrets, giving rise to mutual complicity: every time any of the man’s descendants found the teacher, he would teach them to capture the essence of a person in a mezcal in exchange for keep family secret.
This is how, through generations, the members of our family have maintained the unique flavor and the secret of their mezcal: Mezcal Cómplice.
EL CÓMPLICE DE LOS NUEVE PICOS
Nacimiento de un mezcal legendario
Una noche, un hombre se enteró de la existencia de un maestro mezcalero legendario que tenía el don de capturar la esencia de una persona en las gotas del mezcal.
Durante meses consultó con destacados antropólogos, etnólogos y los más reconocidos maestros mezcaleros. La mayoría había escuchado la historia y aunque la tachaban de mera fantasía, el hombre estaba decidido a encontrarlo.
Corroborando en la compleja orografía oaxaqueña, el lugar que mejor se ajustaba a las pistas recabadas era el Cerro de Nueve Puntas, cerca del pueblo de San Dionisio Ocotepec.
Se aventuró a las cercanías del cerro, preguntando a todo con quien se encontraba, pero nadie conocía al tan buscado maestro.
Decepcionado, abandonó el lugar. Pero mientras bajaba del cerro a altas horas de la noche, se encontró con una hermosa mujer de blanco que le hizo una propuesta: si el hombre accedía a seguirla, ella lo llevaría con el maestro.
Conforme atravesaban un campo de agaves silvestres, la tarea se volvió más difícil. Las espinas de los agaves eran cada vez más grandes y la mujer iba tan rápido que surcaba la oscuridad. En este instante, el hombre supo que a quien seguía era la infame Matlazihua, espectro que enamora a los hombres para llevarlos a su perdición. A pesar del dolor y el miedo, su determinación no menguó. El hombre corrió tras ella, espinándose el cuerpo entero.
De pronto, la tortura terminó y se hallaron en un yermo. Al centro de éste se erigía una antigua casa y un palenque mezcalero. Para sorpresa del hombre, la mujer a quien seguía desapareció ante sus ojos. Tras esfumarse, divisó una figura imponente que se asomaba desde el umbral de la casa. Por fin había encontrado al legendario maestro.
Habiendo conversado un largo tiempo, el maestro accedió a revelarle sus secretos, dando pie a una complicidad mutua: cada vez que cualquiera de los descendientes del hombre encontrara al maestro, éste le enseñaría a capturar la esencia de una persona en un mezcal a cambio de mantener el secreto en familia.
Fue así como a través de generaciones, los miembros de nuestra familia han mantenido el sabor inigualable y el secreto de su mezcal: Mezcal Cómplice.
